It’s Tpep time again criterion # 2 revisited…

What is TPEP Criterion #2?  It is demonstrating effective teaching practices.  How do you demonstrate effective teaching practices?  The overlap of the three frameworks is the quality of questioning and reflecting on the effectiveness of the lesson.

One of my favorite opening activities is the Whip Around with Tally.  Who’s the most important person in your life?  I list family members on the board, whip around the class asking every student quickly, and tallying the responses.  The next day I list a bunch of reasons why people are important to us and ask them to connect the sentences using a sentence frame.

____is the most important person to me because__________.

This can be done with any topic.  What is your favorite sport and why?  This data can be graphed or just used to compare to students in the target culture.  Remember to provide the frame.  My favorite sport is______because_____.

Use images to promote higher level thinking with limited language.  Images help make authentic texts comprehensible.  Add  your own images to a difficult text to make it more accessible to novice learners.

Here is an activity called la familia moderna.

You can practice asking questions at different levels of difficulty from photos.  List the family members.  What is each person doing?  Who is the happiest?  How do you know?  What are the differences between a modern family and a traditional family?  What time of day do you think it is and why? Is this a good way for families to interact? Why or why not?

Another activity that promotes higher level thinking and questioning is called Powerpoint Karaoke or PechaKucha.  PechaKucha is a simple presentation format where you show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images.

Question Tennis

Form 2 lines.  The first 2 people take turns asking  questions.  They have to ask a related question.  If they answer the question, or can’t ask a related question, they go to end of the line and the next challenger steps up.

What other activities promote higher level thinking and questioning?
